Freezing while searching for updates?

I have been having problems Updating my Windows XP home edition latly. I use
The Windows update page and it goes all the way up until it is searching for
available updates, where it freezes. The connection is still there, but there
is no transfer beetween it. I have waited for up to an hour for it, nothing
still.

This all began awhile back when I turned my computer on after 4 months. It
was infected with a Virus/Spyware something, that would pull pop ups every 5
seconds. I had to do a non destructive restore to entirly get rid of it
(note: My HP computer did not come with a Windows restore disk). I was under
the impression that a non destructive restore would not require a Restore
disk, but I seem to remember it asking me for the disk after the restore.
Ever since I did the non destructive restore my auto updates have not been
working, and my windows update page have not been working.

Is there a solution to my problem?

Try the following:

-Make sure the computer is free of all ad/spyware.
-Delete Temporary Internet Files, history and cookies.
-Assure there are no viruses
