Fresh 98SE install - IE6 won't load microsoft.com

I can browse to ANY other website but microsoft.com, or use update.
Believe me, I have tried everything... All suggestions from windows
update troubleshooter... and every other suggested trick from two days
of searching the internet. What a joke.. Microsoft product doesn't even
work on its own website. Windows update does not work either.... just hangs
.... no error messages, no log.

This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600... fresh install of 98SE, with the
latest updates (except for the security updates). IE 6 works for any other
website I have browsed to but NOT microsoft.com.... it just locks up,
or displays a 404. I'm about to give up and tell the guy he should be
thankful he CAN'T get to Microsoft's website.

Such as?
It's a common symptom of a certain third-party toolbar
Try uninstalling such.

As well certain types of malware can infiltrate the TCP-IP stack.
This is not the best newsgroup for diagnosing such problems.
