Fresh install win XP home

what updates should i install before i connect to the internet

If you are making a clean installation of XP home as shown here:

step 34 is to logon to XP and apply Service Pack and Critical updates
from Windows Update before installing any software or hardware.

So you would need to be connected to the internet with the Windows
firewall on (it should be by default but check) and with no Anti-Virus running.
