Completely fresh install of XP Pro and nothing else, disabled Auto updates as
it appears to cause so many prblems. install active X and the update software
from micro$ and if i click express update it just sits there scaning like a
lifeless potato for as long as you are will to wait. any ideas anyone.

I asked this same exact question and the answer was it is us. It's not us
it is a problem with the update site. I don't know but I do know this. I
updated to use the Update site. And when I finally got past that progess
bar after 30 mins I had to install the same updates again to use the site.

well first i decided to switch Autoupdates to "check for updates but dont
download or install" to see if it could check the update site and it can ???.
Downloaded all the updates it could find so i've now got all the sercurity
and system updates. hope'd this would of solved the web site issue but no
joy. looks like it must be the website since auto updates can get access.

Yes what that shows you is your connection is fine. You have no trouble
there. The Web Interface is broken on your end. The Web interface is not
broken in the sense you get errors that everyone is getting. That has
happened though. You can look at your certificates (look in Help) and see
if there are any that have expired. Do not delete those for an expired
certificate can be better than none. See if you can update those
certificates if any are expired and try the site again. Note that you have
to enable all signed ActiveX components and enable Scripting. And a bunch
of others in IE security and that is the browser you are using I hope. Make
sure your AV is off and make sure you have disabled popup stoppers that
includes Microsoft's attempt at antispyware.

The difference is that your account is used to do that download.
When BITS is doing the download the account is Local System.
Proxy users therefore need to allow anonymous logon for the WU
download site. Third-party firewall users and users of network security
apps may have similar issues to deal with.
