Friend causes Error Message

Every time I use MSN when my friend sends me a message or even is online I
will get an error message without fail. MSN then stalls and I have to close
it. The message is as follows
Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on
might be lost.
Please tel Microsoft about the problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Windows
Live Messenger. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.

What data does this error report contain?

I want to fix this because I enjoy chatting with my friend. I use the newest
version of Windows Live Messenger that is available.

First thing to do is to uninstall any third-party tools or patches you may have applied to
Messenger. This includes Messenger Plus, A-Patch, Mess Patch, Stuffplug etc.

If that fails or doesn't apply, we'll need to verify you're using 8.1 ("latest version"
unfortunately can mean 8.1 or 8.5), and which operating system (I assume XP).
