frozen keyboard

Vista Home Premium
Can't find the answer through Google.
Have a wireless keyboard. In the last few days my keyboard seems to
'freeze.' That is, when I type, nothing happens. I have to hit a key
for a couple of seconds before the character appears on the screen. And
sometimes, hitting a key results in double characters on the screen.
Almost like something is tying up the PC.
How do I troubleshoot this?

Connect a normal wired keyboard and see if the problem continues. If it
does, your wireless keyboard may be the culprit. If not, it's something
to do with Vista.

Have you installed any software recently that might have interfered with its
functionality? Also, check the manufacturers website for driver and software
updates that might resolve this issue.

Would you mind telling us this brand name and model of the keyboard?

You can often find this information at the back of the keyboard. Again, I
suggest you check the manufacturers website, in this case HP for any updated
software and device drivers for your keyboard. If you can't attempt that at
the moment, try uninstalling the keyboard, restart and let the redetect the
keyboard and attempt reinstallation.

Have you tried borrowing a different keyboard to see if it has the same
problem?

I would launch task manager and see if you are maxing out one one of your
cores when this happens. I have had that problem in the past. One core
maxed out and another with plenty of capacity. While that was happening I
would set the affinity of several of the high cpu using tasks to the less
used core. Unfortunately you have to do it every time you logon if that is
your problem.

Keyboard Model # 5189URF

DLd and installed most recent driver - we will see if that helps

>>"maxing out one one of your cores . . ." I have no idea what this means

FWIW, I am getting an occasional error associated with HPQDDSVC which is
HP's DeviceDiscovery Service. Any chance of a connection?
