Frustrated with update.

I have followed all sorts of advice but go round and round in circles. I have
reregistered the update things but always go back to scratch. My computer has
been horrible for two days. Not sure what is going on but want to get SP2
which is impossible at this point. I cannot get to my computer from the icon
or anywhere else (the actual drop down menu) so obviously something is off.
Hope to get SP2 or even SP 3 at this point which might reload some of the
damaged files. Any advice welcome. I am running XP.

If you haven't installed SP2 yet, your computer is very likely chock full of
malware. It might be reparable, but I'd be inclined to move your data to
offline storage, erase the disk and start again.
