FTP fine in IE7, but nothing in Explorer

I'm trying to set up a folder like I used to have in XP under My Network
Places. I've found how and where to do it, and that's all fine, but it
doesn't work.

If I go to my FTP server in IE7 or even Firefox, I am able to log in and see
all my files, HOWEVER, if I use Explorer (including starting in IE7 and using
Page->View in Explorer), nothing shows up when I connect to the FTP server.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what's going wrong? The only thing I can
think of is that my login is an email address with an @ in it, and when I
look at the link that shows up in Explorer, the @ has been converted into a
%40.

The "Publish this file to the web" feature in XP has become Network Location
in Vista. Open Computer, right-click on an empty space, and choose Add
Network Location. A wizard will appear to add your FTP site, web share
website, or server shared network folder. Once you fill in the address, an
icon for it will appear in Computer. This icon will open the site in
Explorer, with Explorer's interface, to which you can drag and drop your
files. For FTP, it's a simple solution to download, upload, and otherwise
manage files, but it works fine, if you want nothing more complex than than
that.

Too, "Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer)" should be
checked in Internet Properties, on the Advanced tab, if you want the typical
Windows Explorer icons.

I was able to make the shortcut to the FTP site/folder (I've tried LOTS of
combinations) using the Add Network Location wizard, and still have had zero
luck whatsoever. I made sure that "Enable FTP folder view" was enabled, and
even went so far as to add the ftp server to my list of trusted sites.

I'm just perplexed as the command line FTP works, as does IE7 and Firefox.
What is the rub with Explorer?

Is the entry "Use passive FTP" checked in Internet Properties, on the
Advanced tab? (I have success with that checked). When in Computer, log-in
using just your user name (don't put your whole email address, for example
just enter "myname", not " ". If you had the
Wizard remember your password, you may have to delete the shortcut in
Computer, and create a new shortcut with the Wizard (using the address you
use to get to the site, for example
ftp:///).

I have tried "Use Passive FTP" both checked and unchecked. If I delete the
shortcut and create a new one using only the base part of the username, the
authentication fails.

So it appears that it is making the connection to the FTP server, yet it is
not showing any of the folder structure that exists.

Okay, my ISP's FTP access only works when entering the user name, and not
the whole email address, when logging in. If you are not getting any errors
logging in, and Computer is showing the site as blank, try right-clicking
in in the window and choosing Refresh. Right-click the window again and
choose New > Folder. Does New Folder show up? Also, right-click the window
and choose Properties, and when the Properties window pops up, Copy the
Location, and then open IE7, and Paste it into IE7's address box. Does
going to that address in IE7 work? Is the folder "New Folder" there?

Yeah, my web provider uses the full email address as the login. I think that
it wasn't actually authenticating - it was going nowhere. I believe it has
to do with the way that it is using the @ to indicate the separation between
the username and the ftp site. When I create the shortcut (which I realized
I have to not put the username with the @ sign, or it won't work at all), it
makes a very strange looking link...

So I think the trick is to keep the username together with the @ sign...I
will try it later with quotes and double quotes to see if that helps...
