One point i discovered is that if you have a drive with a partition C:,
D: and back up C: using MS backup facility onto the D:
It will not restore, the reason is that it wants to re-format the
entire disk, not allowing you to select the C: drive to restore to--
you must have a completely seperate drive.

This was my experience.

I would suspect that D: has system files on it. Here is how I managed to do
a full system backup. The Master HDD has 3 partitions (C, D and E). C has
only the OS, D is where I install all programs and E is used only for
backup images. I do have secondary physical HDD, but is not involved in
backups. When I do the whole drive backup, I make sure it saved (make sure
both C and D drives are selected for imaging) to the E drive. Note that
Vista will only save one backup to any partition. Doing this I have never
had a problem restoring.

Also if you happen to have a usb external drive, Vista will backup and
restore using the external drive. Have never tried using a finger drive,
but that may work also.

One final note, when restoring, Vista does NOT always show the correct
location of the image to be restored. This is NOT a problem as long as you
have only ONE image on your computer. I have done two image and was never
sure which one was being used to restore LOL.
Hope some of this is helpful.
