It is funny, every time someone post a problem with SP2 this Guru pop up
saying how wonderful the SP2 update is.

I said it before and I'll say it again (read post on August 20)

"SP2 is the biggest crap ever seen"

Obiously there are probably 1000 or more idiots with corrupted systems or
PC's that don't have the right configuration. Some of them were working fine
just minutes before the update and right after installing SP2 they become
magically "corrupted and unstable systems".

Come on folks do what I am doing
DON'T INSTALL SP2 YET!

Instead keep using your wonderful PC and protect it with the following.

1. updated antivirus
2. antispyware software
3. Updates patches from oh well, Bill's company
4. Replace Internet explorer by Mozilla firefox or simply Mozilla 1.7
5. A combination of a hardware firewall (router) and software firewall

That's it folks , keep it simple for now until Microsoft is able to offer
something "IDIOT PROOF" because that is what these guys think that you and I
are.

My two cents worth for the SP2 update

I couldn't agree more.

MS seem to have assumed that everyone is an idiot, and I am a little cross
about it.

I've been running SP2 since the RC1 beta on both my XP Pro PCs. One is a
1.1 gig Athlon on a motherboard that hasn't had a BIOS update since 2001
because that's the last one available for it. The other is a dual boot - XP
Pro and Windows 98SE.

Other than having to run Word Perfect 8 in Windows 98 mode (the latest
version is WP 12), I haven't had one problem with SP 2. I did have some
difficulty in accessing the Windows Update Catalog on my main PC because of
Administrator rights, but I was able to resolve that.

SP2 is a requirement for installing new patches. It is a critical update,
and it must be installed in order to keep your Windows PC up-to-date.

I have installed SP2 on a vast number of machines and I have encountered no
problems whatsoever. I suspect that the majority of people are in the same
position. Your comments only serve to unnecessarily frighten inexperienced
users, who may be foolish enough to take your advice and leave their systems
unpatched and vulnerable. This is a bad thing.

Dale... the following is more a negative venting toward M$ and not a
flaming reply to you personally so please don't take the following
personal.

* * *

That is the quandary that confirms what I have long heard and
witnessed about M$, got two choices.... stay unpatched and vulnerable
but up and running or get patched and take the chance of crashing.

AS you put it ("critical update, and it must be installed in order to
keep your Windows PC up-to-date") tells me that I am in essence
forced to do this buggy update in order to 'qualify' for further
critical updates. Problem is, the reasons for this buggy update are
already taken care of by 3rd party venders on my system which have
been doing a very fine job of protecting me from M$ security holes and
such.

M$ could have coded this buggy update to where people could have the
choice to use it or not, to use their own security applications or use
M$'s update. But they coded their buggy update to where if you don't
install it, then you don't 'quality' for any further critical updates.
Thus... in order to 'qualify' for any further critical updates, I must
take this huge chance in installing this buggy thing and hope for all
that my computer is still running afterwards.

I have seen the argument on here that there are only a few that have
had problems compared to an overwhelming amount that haven't. Sorry
to differ but all the online forms of upcoming rack magazines are
showing many articles about the SP2 horror not to mention two reports
I have already seen on the evening network news concerning the
problems associated with this thing.

M$ can spin it all they want but it all still boils down to that M$
has done again what it has a vivid history and well established track
record of doing.... it has prematurely released a bug ridden
conglomerate of code that is not ready for release.

SP2... from the people that brought you Edlin and ME.
*** Bill Gates awarded the National Defense Medal of Honor for sending
a copy of SP2 to the Bin Laden Terrorist Network...

SP2 was extensively tested on hundreds of thousands
of machines. If folks are having a problem installing
it, it is because their system is corrupt to begin with.
I have installed SP2 on many machines and have yet
to see as much as a single error message or an application
not performing as it should.

Please do not rant on since your statements are not
at all true of SP2. All you have done is say you believe
in hearsay and you have a negative bias toward Microsoft

I recently installed SP2 on three computers:

1. Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook running Windows XP Pro SP1.
2. HP Pavilion 760c desktop running Windows XP Home SP1.
3. Custom-built desktop (MSI 865PE Neo2 - P4 2.8 GHz) - Windows XP Pro SP1.

I'm pleased to report no SP2 installation issues occurred. After a good defrag,
all PCs running fast and smooth.

I would suggest performing a Disk Cleanup and then a Check Disk prior
to installing SP2. After installing SP2, perform a Defrag.

I agree with you. I also agree there are holes in XP especially IE. The
critical updates in OE was a bit much ....telling the user to click to allow
images to load.
It all comes down to common sense when opening ANY email..Turn off the
preview pane, right click properties and view the source before opening an
email and for god sakes run virus protection. Maybe a good way to babysit
the idiots would be to incorporate a scan that detects updated virus
programs. If the scan reveals that you are too dumb to run virus protection.
Then your too dumb to be on the internet period! At that time it would
disable everything to the point that you couldn't even connect to the
internet.
I run IE only when I need to Firefox is the default of choice because of
clean spyware scans.
Since there seems to always be a reply to anything remotely negative
regarding this update how about explaining Windows Explorer caching of
ZoneIDs
flaws in SP2 http://www.heise.de/security/artikel/50051/0
This could get interesting ehh Enrique?

Well, some "Heresay" from "Carey Frisch [MVP]" says:

So there you go folks.... "heresay" that three computers made it
through the installation. All is well......

Look "MVP", your stuff has a serious problem and everyone knows it.
Don't try to spin it into something that it isn't and drag poor
innocent people into believing that it will do no harm in installing.

In other words, and from someone that should know: "Please do not rant
on since your statements are not at all true of SP2." I agree, your
supporting statements about SP2 are "not at all true about SP2"
because SP2 is evidently harmful.

Are you referring to the Washington Post article that had more to
say then you wished to convey? It's a three page article and you might
want to read the other two pages for a more complete story.

<snip from article>

Not all schools are so worried. American University in Washington, the
University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the College of William and Mary
are encouraging students to install the upgrade as soon as possible.

"I think some schools are being somewhat unnecessarily paranoid about this,"
said Carl Whitman, American's executive director of e-operations. "At this
point, the bad stuff on the Internet is getting pretty out of hand and we
need whatever help we can get."

Georgetown University will not block Service Pack 2 downloads either, said
spokeswoman Laura Cavender.

Dan Updegrove, vice president for information technology at the University
of Texas at Austin, said his school is advising students to get the update.

"We want to get it out there as fast as we can," Updegrove said. "The idea
of telling our students to install a patch to block this other patch -- and
then in the event that an Internet attack that would have been prevented by
SP2 surfaces telling them to then please delete the install anti-patch patch
– that strikes me as a little absurd."

Carey - you're wasting your time. These folks have their minds made up that
SP2 is a disaster even though it's an excellent update that will help noobs
be safer when they're connected to the internet.
