Gadget margins - how stop them moving - and resizing

I am running with the sidebar closed and keep my gadgets tight against
the right side of my desktop.

If I reboot they all move away from the side towards the center by
about an inch. How can I make them keep their position without
creeping in?

Also - is it possible to resize them? I's like them all a bit smaller.
