Games For Windows Live Connection Problems

Hi,

I've recently purchased Gears of War and have been trying to get the Live
aspect of it working, so far without success. I am unable to connect to the
Live network through my home network (cable modem->router->my computer)
however if I directly connect my PC to the cable modem I'm able to connect
without any problems, which would suggest there is some issue within my
network somewhere.

I've configured my router with the necessary ports required for Live, and
have also done a manual update to the latest Live version, but when trying
to connect I always get the following connection error: 0x80151909. I've
looked up the error on the troubleshooting page however it doesn't provide
any useful information on how to resolve the problem
(http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US...ootsignin.aspx)

The event viewer also reports the following errors when Live is trying to
connect:

Warning 1:
Title wargame-g4wlive.exe (1.0.3329.131) XLive 1.2.0238.0
C:\Windows\system32\xlive.dll
0x80151909

XLive Logon Failed

<NIC's MAC Address>
192.168.x.x
0x0
LogonHR == 0x80151909
Games for Windows LIVE DLL

Warning 2:
Title wargame-g4wlive.exe (1.0.3329.131) XLive 1.2.0238.0
C:\Windows\system32\xlive.dll
0x80151909

Live Logon Failed

<NIC's MAC Address>
192.168.x.x
0x0
LogonHR == 0x80150002
Games for Windows LIVE DLL

Trying to narrow the problem down further I enabled uPnP on my router to
ensure that the program should have no problem negotiating the router,
however it is still unable to connect with the same errors as above.

Has anybody come across issues connecting to Live for Widows through a
router or know of any solutions on how to get this working? For reference my
PC is currently using an onboard NIC (Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit
Ethernet Controller) running under Vista x64. I've tried using another NIC
to rule out any incompatibilities with that however again it still will not
connect. The only way so far I have had a successful connection was by
directly connecting to the Cable Modem.

My router is a Linux box running Shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net/), and
while it would seem to suggest the issue lies with the router, the fact that
it still doesn't connect when uPnP is enabled would suggest to me that the
problem lies either with the software itself or some configuration issue on
my PC (unfortunately I don't have another PC that is capable of running
Gears to test this theory out)

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated,
I'm completely stumped.

Many Thanks,

Andrew

The GFWL support website is a little thin on details at the moment. Your
error is not that the 'service is unavilable' as much your computer cannot
get through to the service, which is probably due to your router blocking
the ports needed by Xbox Live.

Try the Xbox Live pages, such as:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/co.../equipment.htm

Thanks for the response Chuck,

I have tried forwarding the required ports for Live (88 and 3074 both TCP
and UDP) without success, I've also tired changing the port it uses through
the registry again without any success. To rule out any issue there is with
the port forwarding I enabled uPnP but again it still gives the error I
mentioned in my first post - no other software or hardware I have has any
problem connecting to the Internet which is why this is so puzzeling.

For your info I've uploaded a screenshot of the Network Information screen
from within Live to http://andrewm.coos-server.co.uk/files/epic/network.jpg
.. I've also submitted the error to Epic themselves to see if they can shed
any light on the matter but I'm not hopeful of a response anytime soon...

Thanks again,

Andrew

There's a patch for Gears of War here
http://gearsofwar.com/GearsPC/Gears+...tle+Update.htm which fixes
some Live issues.

Please be aware that if you can currently play without being signed into
GFWL, then it may be best to leave it this way for a while as a LOT of GFWL
users are having constant crashes. See
http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15 for info relevant to
the game you have.

I have the same issue with my games for windows live Halo2 for pc.
I have an intel wireless card on my alienware notebook. Everytime I try
to connect wirelessly It disconnects my wireless connection and gives a
log-in failure for LIVE, and I have to manually reconnect to my network
after exiting game.
If I plug directly into my router via ethernet it works perfectly.
I have updated the game and LIVE through ethernet connection, but just
cant get the wireless to stop disconnecting. As for settings- I hear all
over that it must be router/firewall ports, etc. When connected to
router through ethernet it goes through the same firewall/port settings.
Scratching my head here....

*NOD32 detects virus on the xlive server, and terminates connection.*

IMON archive http://card.mygamercard.net/sig/Deihmos.png
BAT/Death_Byte.D virus
Connection terminated
