Welcome to Windows Vista. The Vista audio model is significantly different than
the XP audio model. Many of the Vista audio drivers came without the ability to
record the audio stream directly (what you refered to as stereo mix).

The reason is somewhat unclear. Some people refer to some internal MS
documentation that told soundcard vendors to remove that capability from their
Vista drivers or they would be sued by the recording companies.

Other people hold that the initial soundcard chips did not have the horsepower
under Vista to create a digital stream at the same time they were producing an
analog stream.

Some soundcard vendors have the capability in the driver, but "hid" it from
casual users.

Google is your friend - if you search on the keyword "vista stereo mix" you will
find lots of information on what happened and how to work around it.
