Just put the OE System Recovery CD in the drive and follow the directions,
right? Yeah... riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

OK... about 5 trips through that amusing (to someone) little labyrinth, I'm
back to where I was when Symantec's paybackware (Norton Internet Security 04)
fixed my wagon for uninstalling it IAW Instructions from my old Drive.
Sometimes I can boot right up; usually it hangs and requires several kicks
via power-sw on Surge, trips through "Safe Mode," etc. One more {yawn} POS
that does not function as-advertised, in a world increasingly characterized
by same.

Q: can Windows-Update examine my system and detect things-amiss (other than
Gatewayâ„¢ saw me coming) and recommend fixes (other than float-testing this
Gatewayâ„¢ boat-anchor)..? Thanks for your time.

No, Windows Update is for detecting the need for and installing updates,
not detecting problems.
If you are having random problems booting, go to the hard drive
manufacturers website and get their hard drive diagnostics.

Otherwise you should contact Gateway, a Gateway newsgroup
(alt.sys.pc-clone.gateway2000) or a Windows ME newsgroup:
