Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered a problem.

I'm getting the Error "Generic host process for Win32 has encountered a
problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience." while windows
updates is searching for updates. How do I solve this problem?

Had the same problem for a while and found out that some time ago, the Update
for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
(KB842773) was failed in my installation history. I re-installed it and
fixed the issue. It fixed it once again after I had to start my PC with a
last known good configuration: the Generic Host Process stuff started again,
re-applying the update fixed it a second time. Hope this will help
