Genuine Advantage Failure

My laptop started failing last night. Trying to resolve it today I have run
complete virus scans (clean) and selected the Get Genuine option at the
message.

The response is Validation Not Completed: Invalid Product Key

I go to How To Tell and select Validation Assistant – Validate Now
The ActiveX popup appears, right clicked and select install. The page
reappears with a ! Balloon in IE that says “Add-on Disabled This Web page
wants to us an add-on that is either disabled or from a publisher you have
blocked. To enable the add-on, click here.” From the manage Add-ons it shows
the Windows Genuine Advantage is listed and enabled.

I then found the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Site and ran the diagnostic.
It failed at Microsoft ActiveX Controls Loading. I clicked “resolve now”.
The ActiveX popup appears, right clicked and select install. Again the page
reappears with the same ! Balloon.

The system is still the original OEM install from 11-2002. Yes I have the
original disks and COA cods.

Any suggestions short of rebuilding the system?

Since you are contemplating steps short of wiping out all data,
why not wipe out the WGA ActiveX? Before you do that, if you
have installed IE7, roll back to IE6. Then the WGA ActiveX you
wiped out ought to return and install during the diagnositic.

Obviously, if your hard drive is failing or you've caught a bad
case of malware, your main problem isn't with validation.

Google on the WGA forum and post there.
