Genuine Advantage Notifications won't install

I am unable to install either the Windows or Office Genuine Advantage
Notifications (KB905474 and KB949810) on my XPsp2 system. I have tried to
follow various directions found on other threads, including using the
Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool, making sure all necessary
services are not disabled, and cleaning out
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads. Nothing has helped.

The end of my WindowsUpdate.log says the following:

Also note that prior to trying to install these Genuine Advantage
Notification updates alone, I tried them with the set of critical updates for
this month, and they prevented any of the updates from installing. I have
had that problem before - so I first installed the other critical updates
without the GA updates (which worked), then tried to install the GA updates -
which failed. I have had the install-together problem before, but
previously, installing the other critical updates and then separately later
the GA updates worked. Not this time.

Can anyone help me?

Neither of the Notification Tools are *required* to be installed.
The *Validation Tools are*.

So, if the Validation Tools for Office and Windows are installed,
suggest you Hide both *Notification* Tools.

If you still want to install them, then go here:
http://social.microsoft.com/forums/e...egory/genuine/

Post about these issue to these forums -
Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows XP)

Office Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Office)

Microsoft has representatives in the WGA Forums, but they are not
present in this newsgroup.

Even though they pertain to WGA/OGA, the delivery and installation of these
updates is still the responsibility and the function of Windows Updates.
Normal WU troubleshooting applies, and look for solutions from WU support
rather than from WGA/OGA support.

0x00000643 ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE
Fatal error during installation. Represents the return code for a
generic error in a Windows hotfix package

0x80242008 WU_E_UH_OPERATIONCANCELLED
An operation being done by the update handler was cancelled

0x8024000B WU_E_CALL_CANCELLED
Operation was cancelled

0x80240FFF WU_E_UH_OPERATIONCANCELLED
An operation being done by the update handler was cancelled

Normally, yes, one *should* be able to troubleshoot installation errors
from the WU.log as they *normally* include error codes for failed installs.
There *should* be a FATAL error showing where the installation is
failing. ALL of the error codes the OP's posted from the WU.log are
WARNING and generic errors.
Either there are no FATAL error codes generated from the installation of
of these *not required* updates or they were not posted.
Since the Notification tools are *not required* in order for a system to
update, the WGA Forum is the location where the OP should seek
assistance IF they *want* to install these *not required* updates".
