2 out of the three XP machines here demanded the Genuine Advantage Validation
Tool to be downloaded (even though it had already been applied back last
July), failed to install it, then just sat and sulked. So no more updates on
Patch Tuesday for me, I guess.

Run the diagnostic tool and then install the patch either from WU or from the downloadable version

WGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Downloadable WGA file:-

Well, the first part was fine. The second part stopped with a small "access
is denied" box followed by a statement that the Gen Adv Validation Tool had
only been partly installed. Enjoyable, isn't it?

But then - running update again - it played ball. So thanks to TaurArian for
a fix. I don't have anything like this grief keeping my Linusx installations
updated.

Did you read my recent append: "Windows Genuine Advantage Failure"?

Yes - but I've never been into this part of the registry and couldn't relate
your post ("Wrong permissions on
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1. I don't know why
SYSTEM and Adminss no longer had Full COntrol on these keys.") to the
entries I can see there. Only entries are Default, CSLID \ Default and
Curver \ Default which all have entries which do not mention control. I'm
sorry if this reveals my lack of knowledge........

I'm glad I read this post - I had exactly the same "Access is denied"
message with XP Home. I would probably have wasted no end of time trying to
sort this out, and not realizing that the update was now operable.

Thanks for saving me a lot of time!
