Genuine Disadvantage

What is going on with Windows Genuine Advantage? I spent three hours
today trying to get it to recognize my Sony Vaio laptop with XP Home
SP 1. It's OEM and perfectly legal.

I've sent an email to MS and hopefully they will respond with
something meaningful.

It is SO F****NG frustrating to have these "updates" and
"improvements" offered and they don't work! I've been burned often
enough in the past by installing Miscrosoft's latest patches that I'm
really wary of trusting anything. Now my laptop is f***ed.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh

If your WINXP version is OEM the support is from Sony, the supplier, and not
Microsoft.

Well that sux, don't it? If MS wants to make everybody, EVERYBODY, do
a Genuine Disadvantage check in order to get needed updates, then they
really ought to see to it that their creation actually works. Sony
isn't responsible for changes M$ instigates.

Boy am I in a ****y mood!

If it installed and said your OEM is not valid, open IE, go to
Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Manage Add Ons. Disable Windows Genuine
Advantage. Close IE for it to take effect. Open IE and go to Windows Update
and ignore the bubble that pops up and download updates to your heart's
content.

Incorrect.

MS Windows Genuine Advantage was created to "protect" MS
(and not the customer) from piracy,
not Sony.

If it fails, MS should fix it.

BTW: it works fine om my OEM SP1
(and no, I do not intend to trash my XP again with SP2)

It's irrelevant that it "doesn't work". They've gathered the relevant
marketing information from your machine for their databases by that stage,
and that's all that matters.

They don't do that.

For other posters. Failure of WGA is Microsoft Responsibility not the
OEMs. Reason it was created after they made the computers.

Have you tried here:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow...lang=en#WinVal

Or here:
http://communities.microsoft.com/new...P=WGA&sLCID=us

From the first:

Q:
What should I do if I have a problem with the Windows validation
process?

A:
If you cannot resolve your problem using this FAQ, please use the
Contact Us link at the bottom of Microsoft Download Center pages to request
additional assistance. For English users, you may also access the WGA
newsgroup for additional discussion and user-to-user support.

OT: Fishy, somehow your Forte Agent is adding another 'Re:' to your replies
(see subject of this message/thread) and your messages don't "thread"
properly. Others here use Agent without this behavior. Can you fix it or
go back to posting with OE, please?

Thank you.
