My wife's computer got the "blue screen of death" twice after an attempted
upgrade to SP2, so I've given up and am sticking with SP1. But now I can't
get critical updates, because the updater wants me to install SP2 first.
Seems like I should be able to get those updates without installing SP2. Any
ideas?

Brian;
This should answer your question:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/noupsp2.htm

Note the warning at the bottom of the page.

Brian: You should contact Microsoft Product Support for help getting SP2
installed.

Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/
In the middle of the page is a section titled "Assisted Support". Click on
the link to select a product (XP Home, XP Professional, etc.) and you will
be taken to a page that will let you request email help, an online chat, or
a phone call. These guys are pros and can help resolve almost any install
problem.
