It appears I cannot get the MAC address for a wireless card on Vista
unless it has a connection. I need to be able to get the MAC address
for the wireless card before it has a connection. Can anyone suggest a
way it is possible to do this? Thanks.

In a command prompt...

ipconfig /all

That should show you MAC addresses of all adapters, connected or not.

Also, at least for my wireless card, the MAC is printed on the card itself
(D-Link AirPlus G)

Hmmm, it's working now, I wonder why it wouldn't list the MAC address
for the wireless card before. Thanks guys!
