Error code 0x80072EEF can stem from a proxy server or a firewall
blocking access to Windows Update.
If you're not running a proxy server, suggest you go to Internet Options
in the Control Panel. Click the Connections tab, then the LAN Settings
button. Uncheck the box under Proxy server. Click OK.
If you are running one, see this :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900935/
Add Windows Update to the Trusted zone in IE :
Open Internet Options via the Control Panel. Click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted sites icon, then the Sites button.
Add these one at a time :
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
Clear the check mark next to Require server verification (https

for
all sites in this zone if it is checked. Click OK.
Check the HOSTS file :
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883821
" To resolve this error, examine the Hosts file. (This file may also be
named Hosts.sam.) Make sure that the file does not list any static IP
entries for the Windows Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web
site.
The Hosts file is located in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.
To view the Hosts file, you may have to associate the file with Notepad.
To do this, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the Hosts file.
2. Click Open With, and then select Notepad from the list of programs.
If the Hosts file contains a static IP address that is associated with
Windows Update or with Microsoft Update, comment the entry by adding the
# sign at the beginning of the entry. You can also delete the whole line
and save changes to the Hosts file.
Note: Programs, such as Web accelerators, DNS accelerators, DNS caching
utilities, and Spyblockers, can add static IP entries for the Windows
Update Web site or for the Microsoft Update Web site to your Hosts file.
This scenario can cause Windows Update or Microsoft Update to fail. "
