when I use microsoft update I get error message 0x80245003 and it won't let
me update from the microsoft update page. someone posted this url to fix the
problem
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749/EN-US/#appliesto. I am not very
experienced and leary of trying it. If it doesn't work will it mess up my
computer if I screw it up? Does anyone know if automatic updates still work
even if you get this error message?

Please describe in more detail the difficulty you are still having after
following the instructions in 919749.

When I followed 919749, I could not tell if there were spaces in step #3:

"To work around this problem, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run,
type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.
5. Use the Windows Update Web site again to install updates. "

I may have not gotten this correct as it appears to me to be a space between
"r and / and a space between "s and %." If I got this wrong please let me
know.

You ask what my problem is, when I go to Windows update page I get the
following:

"[Error number: 0x80245003]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. "

If you got it right, then the folder
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
and all its contents will have been deleted. It will be recreated after the
"net start wuauserv". So check for the existence of that folder after step
3: if it is still there, you didn't get it right.
