I'm not an expert with PC's so please be patient with me. I'm using windows
2000 professional. I was up and running just great for about 2 months and
then bam. I'm not able to shut my computer down properly. I thought maybe
it was a bad install, I reformated and reinstalled everything and went to
"windows update" and everything looks different. I decided I would do the
express manually (not using the automatic download). I let the system run
all day yesterday and did 10 of the 18 critical updates. Today, I decided, I
would go to the Custom and download some of the smaller files and I did. I
had to rebot the system after these 2 critical updates were installed.
Windows went bonkers. When I started the computer it started coping files
and fixing things. I try to shut down and verify that it's selected shutdown
in the box and it just restarts.

Once I was able to get back to my desk top, I went online to get some more
of the updates and I'm now getting the above error.

As far as to which 2 updates I did, I'm not able to get to the history
screen in Windows Update. I know it was the first two of the 8 remaining.

I'm have Norton's System Works wich is updated and I have Norton's Internet
Security which is updated. Both are running on high levels. I did run the
Win Doc in Nortons to fix any problems and after it ran it, I had 67 issues
that they repaired.

Any easy fixes to get this resolved.

I don't know if I like this new Window Update, because if it requires
someone having a system tech background, I'm going to be lost.

Is there anyway you can recheck that error number, and verify it is the same as what you posted here?
Do not have Norton System Works running while visiting Windows Update website.

Your problems may not be easy to fix, just fyi.

Thanks for following up with me the actual code is 0xc800021f, it looks like
I left out a zero. Anyway, I did try going to the website with Norton's
turned off and I still had the same error.

I turned Norton's back on and now I have the W32.Spyboot.Worm. Printed the
instructions from norton's to try to get rid of it. So wish me luck on that
one. But the other problem with window updates is still there.

I've noticed with my norton's firewall up that I seem to have a lot of
blocks on open ports.

Thanks Tammy

Be sure that the worm & any malware are all gone, and do that before going to Windows Update.
Here's one free virus-cleanup tool to use, even though it will involve time and effort.
See PA Bear's notes on Sysclean from TrendMicro.
Scanning with SYSCLEAN Robear's way
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.phpÂ*?t=10610

After you get clean results:

Click on Start, select Run and type in
"REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL" (w/o the quotes)

See if you get a message that this process succeeded.
