getting no automatic updates EXCEPT Windows Defender

I had to change out the hard disk and do a clean install in early January.
For convenience, I made a slipstreamed setup CD of WinXP with SP3 (downloaded
from MS site). Installation seemed to go fine, no problem. I did NOT restore
anything from backup; I installed all the applications I use from scratch.

One was Microsoft Update, and I see from my WU history that I used it to get
an ATI hardware driver update on Jan 11. Since then I have been getting
Windows Defender updates with great regularity, but no other security updates.

On the recent Patch Tuesday, it became obvious that something was wrong on
this machine because WU wasn't telling me about the updates I'd got on all
the other XP machines in this household.

Pray tell, MVPs, what steps do I try first? Unregistering and reinstalling
the Windows Update program? Uninstalling and reinstalling SP3?

I do run antivirus and other antispyware programs, but of course none of
them were present during the initial install.

Usually method 1 is sufficient but you may have to do method 2.
