I like to clean up any e-mail I send, but I cannot seem to get rid of the
blue line on the left of the message screen. Can anyone tell me how to do
this?

That vertical blue line indicates you are quoting HTML text from
the forwarded message.
First, make sure you are not adding a blue line yourself when you
forward or reply: Go to Tools, Options, Send, HTML Settings,
uncheck "Indent messages on reply".

Next, if any blue lines remain in the compose screen, click Format,
Plain Text,. That will strip all HTML elements.

Unfortunately while removal is rather simple, it is not elegant.

You must be in HTML format. When you click to reply/forward
3 buttons will appear down at the very bottom of the email.
You click the source button. If the buttons are missing, click
View on the menu and put a check mark next to Source Edit.

You will see all the HTML code - which might be very confusing
but here is what you look for - and then highlight and delete.
You look for the Blockquote tag and delete. Delete the
< and all between and then the final >.

<BLOCKQUOTE style="PADDING-LEFT: 5px;
MARGIN-LEFT: 5px; BORDER-LEFT: rgb(16,16,255) 2px solid">

If there are 3 blue lines, there will be 3 sets of that code t
delete.
When you press the edit button to go back to the face of the
email, the blue line(s) should be gone.

Just go and highlight the text that is indented and then click on the
decrease indent button on the formatting toolbar to remove the line.

Is there some setting that prevents that from working?
It does not remove any border lines for me. Actually,
nothing visible happens at all.

The only sure thing I have found is to remove the code
if you want to keep the HTML content intact. (Or switch
to text, per Gary's suggestion, if you don't care about
the HTML)

Doesn't work for me either, and I tested it extensively before
replying in this thread.
