I have my auto updates set to download, but not install
until my say so. It downloaded SP-2, but I don't want to
install it. Our computer guy at work said not to until
Microsoft fixes all the bugs. I'm following his advice as
well as others... from the many horror stories of system
crashes, etc. But now everytime I boot up I get the
reminder window to install. So far I've just been
cancelling it, but this is getting tiresome! Does any one
know how to get rid of it? Delete the download? I can't
find it and the Microsoft website is no help.

Thanks for any help out there.

There is no future time when "Microsoft fixes all the bugs". They are fixed
and SP2 is it.

Millions of users have already installed it.

Not everyone has problems with SP2, but if you don't want it -

Basically, you'll need to clean out the Download folder for WU5

Delete the Contents of the DataStore and Download folders.

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.

4. Click OK.

5. Delete the contents of both the DataStore, EventCache and Download
folders.

Ellyn;
Disable Automatic Update:
Right click My Computer, click Properties, click Automatic Update tab
Or
Use this tool to delay SP-2 installation until April 2005:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2aumng.mspx
Then delete the folders referenced in step 5 on this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spack.htm

The computer guy says "not to until Microsoft fixes all the bugs"?
I would suggest you find someone competent as your computer guy seems
to have no idea how Service Packs are issued and fixed.
The Service Pack 2 of today is identical to the Service Pack 2
available next year.
Instead of waiting, you should research your hardware and software for
SP-2 issues and prepare the computer before installing SP-2:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
There will most likely be updates, patches etc from Microsoft and 3rd
party hardware and software manufacturers but SP-2 will not change.
You need to research the need and applicability of these patches and
updates
If all that is done is wait, you are wasting your time.

I agree with your "computer guy". I downloaded and installed SP2 and could
not boot into Windows, except in Safe Mode. After a few hours of poking
around in Safe Mode, I realized that SP2 could be uninstalled via Control
Panel Add/Remove Programs. I uninstalled SP2 and now my system is back to
normal.

I won't do another Windows Update as long as I own my present computer. I
just can't afford to hose my entire system for questionable benefits that
are already being managed just fine with third party software.

I also was banished to "Safe Mode" after installing SP2.I had to reinstall
Windows XP to get it out of Safe mode. I have since found out that if you
have a HP computer, there are about 5 or 6 upgrades from the HP site that you
have to do BEFORE you install SP2. Call me chicken, but I`m just not gonna
try SP2 again. Keeping my fingers crossed.
