Gigabit Switch and 10/100 Router on the same network

I have a NETGEAR DG834PN modem/router which has 4x 10/100mbps ports. I have
2x gigabit Netgear switches. The NIC on my PC is a gigabit and so is the
port on my NAS.

If I connect the PC and NAS on the same gigabit switch should I be able to
get gigabit speeds. It works if I directly connect PC to NAS without any
other network hardware between.

Do I have to upgrade my router to gigabit to get the NIC on my PC to show it
is connecting at a higher speed than the old 100mbps rate?

I cannot find a Netgear modem/gigabit router combination for the UK so I
assume I just turn off NAT & DHCP etc on my existing modem and connect a new
gigabit router to one of its ports instead.

Any comments welcome.

Graham

If two devices are Gb capable and are both connected to a Gb switch, you
should get Gb performance. If the switch is 10/100, nothing connected to it
can run any faster.

On a Gb switch, you will only get Gb speeds between two Gb devices. Gb to
10/100Mb devices will run at the lower speed.

If you connect a Gb device to a port on your Netgear, it will not run at
Gb speeds. This device is a essentially a 10/100Mb switch with a built-in
modem. You would need to replace it with a Gb device to get Gb performance.
