Giving Up on Updates

I am giving up on installing Windows Updates since I am a dial-up user. My
internet connection is constantly being reset. I did not have these problems
before Hurricane Ivan but after the Hurricane it has been the pits. I know
that DSL would be my solution but it would involve paying close to $15 more
per month over what we pay now for just dial-up. I glad that the files
downloaded have restart points so that when I try to download again, it does
not start completely over. But still it takes numerous times to just do one
download.

Frustrated and in the stone-age with dial-up and the computer!

I have SP1 and SP2 installed from the Microsoft cds but I cannot install
KB834707 due to the problem with my internet connection being reset. Yet the
publishing date for this is 5/15/04? So is this fix not included on the cds?

I don't have the CDs in question to look at. Have you seen
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;834707 to see if you can
manually download & install the fixes indivually?

Please understand that I cannot install the updates because my Internet
connection is reset and the download terminates. It is very frustrating.
!!!!!!!!!

Express install allows you to quickly download and install only the
critical and security updates your computer needs.

Microsoft strongly recommends that you install the following high
priority updates to help keep your computer up-to-date and secure. To
install these updates, click Install.

Total updates selected: 2 items, 7.3 MB, 1 hour 5 minutes Install...
High Priority Updates
Microsoft Corporation - Windows XP family

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP
Service Pack 2 (KB834707)
Download size: 2.9 MB, 26 minutes
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise a computer running Internet Explorer and gain control over it.
You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft.
After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
Details...

Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Download size: 4.3 MB, 39 minutes
This update resolves an issue affecting only customers deploying the
MS04-028 update for Office XP on Windows XP SP2. The original update appears
to install correctly, but it may not actually have completed. To help
protect your computer, we are providing this new update. After you install
this item, you may have to restart your computer. Details...

Shhh..pull back. You aren't reading what I'm writing
Try to download the updates individually, save them to disk, and install
them - not via Windows Update.

See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-038.mspx

Okay, thanks to Microsoft having set restart points, I was able to finish
installing the updates after numerous times after the connection was reset,
rebooting, and then trying again.

But I know I will run into this problem again. Are you saying that these two
updates are comprised of several fixes and I just need to break these down
into separate fixes/components to install? For instance, I have XP and have
installed SP1 from the Microsoft CD so I just need to download for KB834707
from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...playlang=enthe file WindowsXP-KB84707-x86-enu.exe which is for SP2?Thank you so much for the information.Susan"Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"< yahoo.com> wrote in messagenews:. ..> Shhh..pull back. For that particular instance, all of the downloads you needed were available
individually from the link I posted. This may or may not always be true. I
truly hope you don't run into this again, though - if you do updates
regularly you shouldn't have too much to run at once through dialup.
