Globe icon stays in system tray

Windows version: XP Professional SP2 5.1.2600
IE Version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

The computer is running Microsoft Update (as opposed to the older Windows
Update.) All updates appear to have been successfully applied. But the little
blue Windows Update globe never leaves the system tray. It says that KB835732
has been downloaded and is ready for installation. I have re-installed it
multiple times and re-booted multiple times but the globe keeps coming back.
I'd like to make it stop.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

There are a number of things in your report that I find worrying.

First, you claim to be using XP SP2, yet you talk about an update "globe" in
the system tray. This icon has been a yellow shield ever since SP2 was
released.

Second, you refer to KB835732. This was an update for XP SP1 released in
April 2004, but was included within SP2 in August 2004. So if you are
running XP SP2, automatic update should not be calling for this update.

I am inclined to think that your system is in an unsupportable state with
parts of SP2 and parts of SP1. I have no idea how this could have happened.

I recommend that you re-apply Service Pack 2, then apply all subsequent
updates. You can download and "Save" the full updater from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

OK, Robin ... so I'm an idiot. I assumed the user's computer was at the same
level as all of our other PCs and gave you the Service Pack information from
another computer. I should have gotten up off my lazy behind and looked. I
appologize.

You were absolutely correct. Applying SP2 and then applying all subsequent
updates solved the problem.

Thanks!
