Since Microsoft update siezes SVCHOST for all eternity, does anyone know how
to deploy or go back to Windows Update service? I don't mind giving up Office
updates but I hate to leave my entire network of PC's without critical OS
updates and patches. I have over 800 machines and almost 30% have Microsoft
update installed - any thoughts on how to revert back to Windows update
through AD? Can't find any .msi packages for re-installing Windows Update??
THX!!!!!

On the Microsoft Updtates page choose the "change settings" from the left
menu pane. Then check the "Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use
Windows Update only" check box to revert it.

Cheers

Right - sorry - maybe the post wasn't clear - I know how to do that manually
- I need to be able to "push" this solution out to my domain PC's that have
Microsoft Update running through AD - it will be QUITE time consuming to do
this manually on a few hundred systems - any thoughts?? Thx~~~

Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

My first visit to this site and I'm relieved to see that my problem is not
unique. to take it one step further Jeff, when I choose to disable the
update software, I'm asked "Windows Automatic updated will not be able to
deliver updates from Microsoft update service. Are you sure you want to
continue?" If I answer YES, will I still be able to opt for automatic
updates as I always have?
Thanks, and this is a great discussion group.

If you disable Automatic Updates (which I would not recommend), you can
re-enable it later on.

With AU disabled, you will not be offered any Windows Updates automatically.

Hi Donna,
Welcome to our pain - when you do disable the Microsoft Update software, it
will revert back to Windows Update (thankfully) but if you were trying to be
"efficient" like me, then my headache was I had already removed the icon for
Windows Update (I'm a network admin for a school and icons cometimes confuse
my teachers and staff) so i have to "push" it back to their machines - DOH! I
won't make THAT mistake again!!
I also just posted a new comment to see if there is any way possible to
change Microsoft back to Windows updates through AD - I haven't been
successful about getting responses - we'll see~
Good luck!!

One thing just leads to another. I tried selecting "notify me of updates"
rather than doing automatic updates, as my computer has rebooted on its own 3
nights in a row, and now my norton anti-virus is telling me one item is
affecting my status, namely that updates is set to notify me. If I 'fix' the
item, MU changes back to automatic updates. I don't think it will cause a
problem to have that one item requiring fixing ?????

Is it Norton AntiVirus or NSW or NIS? What version? Did you accept the
prompt to make Norton your default "security center" when you installed the
application?

The best thing for now is to disable AU service on entire domain. We had
this configuration for day or two, now we enabled service on all servers but
we still have disabled AU service on all desktops. And all is done through
GPO.

Next thing is you are waiting for reliable fix, patch or workaround to come.
Till then you can enable AU service during non business hours or weekends.

Next week I'm trying configuration with WSUS and no Office detection.
