Where is the "Go one directory up" button?

When browsing files in Windows XP, there was the button that clicking it
brings you one directory upwards in the hierarchy. How can I bring this
button to be in vista? It was very handy when browsing through the files
looking for one.

Hello jackgopher,

Copy files more efficiently.

Remember when the old File Manager application in Windows 3.x would let you
split the view in half so you could more easily copy files and folders from
one location to another? No? Well, maybe I'm just getting old, but ever since
Microsoft replaced File Manager with Explorer, I've missed that
functionality.

In previous versions of Windows, you could sort of emulate File Manager
using various window positioning shortcuts, and in Vista they're even better.

Samuel Macuta says the best way to experience this is to open two Explorer
windows, CTRL+click each in the taskbar, and then right-click one of the
buttons and choose Show Windows Side By Side (or Show Windows Stacked).

Now you can drag and drop files and folders to your heart's content, and
while it's no File Manager, it's not too shabby.

Good luck

Click directly in the address bar.
The parent folders are shown.

Thanks Engel, but I am actually talking about the most basic browsing
such as when looking for a file that you want to attach to an email, o
when looking for a file you want to open in MS Word.

Hobbes - thanks, yes - thats what I'm doing now. But you know
sometimes you just want to go up one directory, without the need t
locate specifically where it is in the address bar and clicking i
there....

In Windows Vista, this button has been removed and the functionality is
replaced by breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs in the Address bar show the current
navigation path, enabling you to easily backtrack or navigate forward
anywhere along an address location.

Or use the keyboard shortcut ALT + UP arrow view the folder one level up.

If you certainly need to restore the "Up" button, get the Mavis Up button, a
software from Mavis Applications. See:
