XP (currently fully up to date) has always had the following peculiar aspect:
Windows Defender updates are notified and the process always completes as
one would expect.
If the auto update notification includes anything other than Defender, the
dialog box is fine and when sent off to do the job, the shield vanishes after
a minute or so and that's the end of that process --- no files are processed
and no further prompts.

A subsequent visit to the download centre, and do the rituals, and the
process works fine, except that after a variable interval during the install
of downloaded updates, the shield re-appears and says that downloads are
available for installation etc.. In fact there appears to be two instances of
updating operating simultaneously.
None of this is life-threatening, but isn't it a bit odd?

I find exactly the same thing with both my desktop and my laptop (both
running XP Home SP2).

I don't know if the automatic update would complete if I gave it long
enough or not; this morning it had downloaded one of the two XP updates
after about an hour, at which point I ran Microsoft Update in my
browser and it quickly retrieved the second update and installed both.
Odd.
