Good Ol' Vista

Hi everyone,

I recently put Vista back on my system (don't ask me wtf I was
thinking) but anyway, no matter how many times I reboot this pig it
blocks explorer.exe which I don't have to tell you is the nutz of
windows. Everytime I reboot the box I have to manually release and
"allow" explorer.exe to run. It's getting on my nerves, I have tried
to unlock it, allow access and such but to no avail it keeps trapping
it.
Uggg.
Any ideas besides going back to XP.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the Event Viewer to see if there are any logged error
messages that might give you possible hit of what could be causing Explorer
to hang?

I was waiting for the Linux whore to drop in on my little post...I run
Suse on my VM Box...SO you are preaching up the wrong tree, I am a
linux user, have been since you were a itch in your daddy's nuts. But
anyway, I was hoping the notorious "Frank" would drop in on my
cluster**** of a post here. I should of put Linux after winXP in my
original post. And I'm using an Unbutu cd as a coaster on my
desk....it works for me....
Flame away..

Joe, I have 2 PC's both running Vista and both run perfectly. But it took me
some effort to get them running like that. Both came with Vista Business
pre-installed. Neither worked properly straight out of the box. One wouldn't
connect to the network and so on. I just reformatted the hard disk and
reinstalled untill they both worked correctly. I reformatted and reinstalled
Vista 3 times on one of the machines until it ran properly.

Vista is a good operating system but it is very bloated. Just look how
slowly it runs even on a machine with a Gig of memory!

If something goes wrong there isn't always a quick fix with so much code all
trying to work together. Just keep reinstalling like I did, then sooner or
later you'll get Vista to stick and you'll eventually become a fan of this
great new operating system.

Good Luck - you'll need it!

Keith

That's a joke. (Not a question, a statement.)

Contrary to that, I was bored over the XMas shutdown from work and ran
across an old 10 Gig HD I had laying around. I thought....this would be a
good time to actually do an HD installation of one of the Linux liveCD's
that I've checked out.

In the past, I had booted them from the CD but never did an HD install,
well, because I (had thought I) didn't have a spare HD (until I ran
across this one....a big 'ol 5 1/4" Quantum BigFoot). There was no way I
was going to do a dual-boot install on my main PC........just in case. I
wanted to see what the performance was on a 'real' install, not running
from the CD.

The short of the story is that the latest Ubuntu, Fedora 8, and E-Live
v1.0 all successfully booted from the liveCD, finding all my hardware. On
each of them, I clicked the 'Install to HD' icon on each one, each of the
3 installed to the HD with no more input than the disk partitioning
stage, and all installed perfectly fine finding all devices and
everything came up roses, in all 3.

Wait, there was some configuration needed. I had to set a static IP
address, as I don't DHCP, and the DNS server entry. But that was it.

When all was said and done, I was fairly suprised at how easy the
installation was.

I then removed the Linux HD and put back in place the Windows HD.

I may look at another distro in 6 months time.

(I'm not making any claims about a 'better' OS, just passing along my
recent experience.)
