Google annoyance solution?

Using IE8 with WinXP. The last few days the Google search page has been
continually asking me if I'd like to make it my home page and if I'd like to
download Chrome. I keep clicking no to both, but I can't find any setting to
permanently stop this annoyance.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Open IE, click Tools>Internet Options>Programs, and make IE the Default
Browser. It sounds as if you are using IE, but it isn't the default so it
allows other browsers to jump in and ask if they should be.

Then, click Manage Add-ons (also in Tools>Internet Options>Programs) and
disable the add-ons. I disable all of them.

Thank you, Jeff! IE is my default browser and has been all along. This issue
with Google is a new one. I've used the Google search engine for several
years. This is something Google seems to be trying to use to get more
"official" customers. I'm not sure about disabling all add-ons at this
point, but I may try that.

I _think_ Chrome is an Apple product that comes (tries to come) when you
download/upgrade iTunes. Maybe I'm thinking of Bonjour...

I have Google Search as my Second Home Page in IE8. With IE's ability to
support Tabbed Browsing, one can have multiple Home Pages where each one
opens in its own Tab. I find it very handy to have the first tab set to the
page I like most for news and stuff, and the second for my search engine,
and a third for Facebook -- which I find to be a huge waste of time, but
that's another post...

I am never prompted by Google Search to use Chrome.

I just lied. I see on the top of the Google Search page that there is a new
banner inviting Google to be my home page. Oddly, it is already one of 3.

I selected Not Now, and closed then restarted IE, and the banner is gone.

Give it a little time, Jeff. It'll be back, again and again and again,
probably along with the invitation to install Chrome (which is Google's
substitute for Internet Explorer).

It's just a banner across the top no wider (taller) than a row of buttons, I
didn't even notice it until you said something.
