Got "Failed" on each patch downloaded via Windows Update

Hi,

I received a new Laptop with Windows XP Pro SP2 UK preloaded. I ran several
times Windows update in order to apply latest updates. It has worked without
any problems except for a last group of updates (KB834707, KB873339,
KB885835, KB885836, KB886185) which all return "Failed" at download time.

I also got same problem on my PC running Windows XP Pro SP1 FR. Windows
Update showed me only one patch (KB842773) and, when I clicked 'Install
updates', I got "Failed".
I have downloaded and installed KB842773 (and related KB883357) manually.
Now Windows Update shows me new patches but still same problem 'Failed' when
downloading them.

May be one patch has written wrong information somewhere ?

Does someone has a solution for this problem ?

Hi

From Start/Run run this exact command:

notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

See if you can find any clues and/or error massages/numbers there and
post e.g. the last 30 lines of that log here.

Http status 401 - access denied indicates that the client
is hitting a proxy challenge

So it looks like you have a proxy configuration problem.

You might need to use proxycfg.exe to either set or remove
a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).


If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

If you actually are using a proxy, you may need to use something
else than -d for the proxycfg command. Open a command prompt and
run "proxycfg -?" (w/o the quotes) for help.
