When I went to Tools\Windows Update in Internet Explorer, I kept getting the
error message "Please change your Internet Explorer security settings ...
Userdata persistence ... (error number 0x800A0046)..." None of the
suggestions I saw on the Internet solved the problem.
However, I found out how to get rid of that error message in my particular
case: One day, I had right-clicked on the folder C:\Windows and had ticked
"Hidden" to hide the Windows folder. When I went and unticked "Hidden" to
make the Windows folder visible again, the error message did not appear
anymore and I was again able to receive Windows updates.
