Got SP2 installed OK but...

Ordered the SP2 CD last week and got it today! Wow! Anyway, I'm running XP
Home - just did a fresh install over the weekend. When I go to Windows
Update, it is saying that there are a bunch of High Priority (security)
updates I need to download and install for SP1 (from 2002, etc.). I would
think that SP2 would have all SP1 updates plus some. Why is it asking me to
download 32MB of SP1 critical updates? Shouldn't SP2 be enough? I'm on
dial-up and I really don't want to download this. Thanks!

That may not solve the problem, but it has worked for me
in the past on an XP SP1 machine that kept trying to
install an update that it already had.
It's worth a try.
Of course, you are correct that very few updates are
needed once you install SP2, so something isn't right.

Thanks, Charlie but no dice. I moved CatRoot2 to another location and
rebooted but when WU scans for updates, it gives me the option of Express
Install or Custom. I choose Express and it tells me to download SP1 Express
install at 1.9MB. This is very strange. I have heard that the installation
history cannot tell if you loaded SP2 via CD so maybe it still thinks that I
don't have anything. You would think that WU would detect what was needed and
what wasn't though regardless of the installation history. I don't want to
download and install SP1 over SP2 especially on dial up and especially if I
really don't need to. Thanks for trying. Of course, I suppose I could try to
download it and see if it just goes through the motions of downloading (i.e.
quick progress bars indicating the patches are all downloaded and installed)
but I'd rather not!

Hi

If you run WINVER from Start/Run, does it say "Service Pack 2"
somewhere in that dialog box?

Here is what the dialog box says:

Micorsoft Windows
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Does WU not search for updates that have been installed by a successive
version of a service pack?

Thanks.

Can you please send windowsupdate.log from the machine. It will be in the
root of your installation. (%windir%).
You can send it directly to me. ().
Thanks,

Hi

It should have come up with this:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service Pack 2)

So I would say that SP2 is not installed completely on your
computer (just partially).

But please don't do anything before contacting Shaji (ref. post
from Shaji in this thread).
