GPRS keeps connecting when WiFi is available

I have AS4.1 and WM5
Desktop sync works fine as does server to Exchange
I can connect to exchange and desktop using USB connection
I can connect to Exchange when using GPRS

What is confusing me is that when the device is connected to the LAN which
also has the Exchange server using WiFi, if I sync with Exchange then it
always activates a GPRS connection, even though the Wi-Fi is connected.

Is there a setting somewhere to tell it the preference of each connection?

Hi,
Are you using Cingular's e-mail program? If you are then when you sync it
tries to sync the e-mail as well.

It seems that whenever I want to access the Internet it goes online with
GPRS even though WiFi is connected. I just tried the web client and that
does the same thing.

I think I have found the problem.

I had my WLAN connection connecting to "Work" instead of "The Internet"
I assume therefore that the device couls only see one connection with
Internet access (The GPRS) and therefore wanted to connect for what it
perceived as an Internet request?

Hi,
That would cause the problem. This is especially true if you have Pop3
e-mail setup and it's trying to sync it.

No it's not POP3
I'm still slightly confused to be honest
The Wireless access point is on the Work LAN
The email is Exchange server and I'm using server activesync
Hence I thought that I would need to setup the Wireless Access Point as the
work network in order to connect to the server and also the LAN resources
and that default gateway settings etc would take care of the Internet
Access.

Is the Exchange server front end on the internet or only reachable on the
works LAN?

If it's in the internet, then the device's HTTP proxy will need to be
configured (and the WIFI card needs to be set to work mode).
If it internal only to your work's LAN, than the server's name shouldn't
have a dot "." in it, or else you will need to add it to the exceptions list
(and the WIFI card needs to be set to work mode also).

A related factoid...

If you visually see and note that a gprs connection persists when a wifi
connection is available, press/hold the endcall button to manually break
the gprs connection... once broken, wifi should take priority if it is
configured to.
