I'm guessing that since you have a 9200, you are still AGP. On the high end
(around $280) you could get an ATI X1950XT. On the $200 range, you can grab
the X1950Pro or the 7800GS
Right at $150, you can get the 7600GS or the X1650Pro

For the $85 budget, you can get the 6600 or the X1550

At $55 level and still have DX9.0c support would be something like the nvida
6200LE or ATI 9550.

I'm a gamer, so I would encourage you to go with the $150 7600GS or
X1650Pro.

But if you just want Aero, then the $55 6200LE or 9550 will be all you need.

Hi,

Minimum spec's include 128MB of memory, pixel shader 2.0, and Dx9 support as
well as WDDM driver support from the manufacturer. The 9200 is not
sufficient for this. From ATI, the 9500 is the minimum card that will work.
Also, you need to have at least 1GB of system memory as well.

Hi Tony--

Video card

Flash Tip: Explaining Aero Glass in Windows Vista
By John Savill

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/abo..._092805_2.mspx

To run Aero Glass, your graphics card must have a Longhorn Display Driver
Model (LDDM). NVIDIA offers a Vista Beta 1 LDDM driver, and ATI also has
LDDM drivers available. To get the full Vista experience, the graphics card
needs a lot of memory (64MB minimum, 128MB recommended) and must support the
complete DirectX 9 API.

There were lots of people beta testing who wanted to know the limits of MB
with the above requirements that would support Aero Glass. 64 MB was the
lowe end of RAM.

I personally would get a 256 or 511 MB RAM video card--check ATI and Nvidia
for what you can afford. There are a large range of cards that you can find
on line at places like New Egg or Tiger Direct or www.pricegrabbers.com that
are economical and support Aero Glass. If you prefer a store, Fry's type
stores www.outpost.com have a number of reasonable cards.

This really gets down to your gaming frequency and needs or other particular
graphics needs as to the new wave of higher end cuttinge edge cards, but
again, you don't need those unless you have specific games or graphics inn
mind.

There are tons of gamer and hdw sites that have terrific info on video
cards, and there are some good articles on Dell's new blog
www.direct2dell.com and I recommend www.extremetech.com put out by the ZD
lab at PC Mag for excellent detailed discusssions on all the new video
cards.

As to your card

Is glass possible on ATi Radeon 9200 by any means ?

Nope: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...estionID=19933

Good luck and hth,

CH

Wow. Excellent choices. I was going to respond to the post, then I read your
response. Great recommendations, from the top two manufacturers.

And don't forget Power supply. gs7600 starts at 350 watts. If you don't have that minimum, you'll brown out for awhile until the PS explodes taking everything with it.

Power supply is an important consideration, and you raise a very important
point. Nearly every one of the 300 OEM Named partners of MSFT who sell
boxes sell the lowest end power supplies possible on high end machines
purposely to save money. The older the machine, the more likely you may
have to carefully replace the PSU making absolutely sure it is the correct
one for your machine. You can't even spec a better power supply for nearly
all of them when you order, because with most of the PC makers, the PSU is
proprietary and there aren't choices from the PC maker.

However, whichever Vid card that you decide on, the major card manufacturers
(unlike most tech support) have 24X7 tech support and it's excellent (if
only all other types of tech support matched their experience, enthusiasm,
and quality) and they can tell you/confirm exactly what the PSU requirements
for that card are if the information isn't included with the card. With a
number of cards, you won't brown out, the video card just won't run with
the inadequate PSU--but your warning is a very good one and it sure could
happen.

Also the factual minimum RAM for Aero Glass is not 128 MB RAM but in fact,
64MB RAM in reality.

Dale White did a really excellent job of posting several specific cards and
prices on this thread. Very nice specific examples.
