The Updater automatically downloaded the updates - no problem - but then kept
asking me to restart. I kept saying "Later" over and over because I was
rendering a large 3D graphic which had been running all day. When it was 5
minutes from being done, Windows Updates restarted my computer by itself!!!!
I lost all that time rendering. To say I was mad at Microsoft is an
understatement! Why doesn't the Updater let us decide when to restart?

Why didn't you choose the option for "Download Updates but allow me to
choose when to install them"?

Because I had no idea installing them would lead the Updater to decide itself
when to restart.

While I feel for the incident you had to go through - I think now would be a
good time for you to make such a setting.

If you are someone who uses their computer in a way as you stated
previously - even on occassion - then I do not know why you wouldn't be
choicier with your updates anyway. After all - you never know when a
certain update might break something you have and you might want to
investigate this before checking the box in Custom install to allow it to
actually install itself.

While the computer should not have rebooted if you were sitting there
delaying it - it would not have come to that if you had chosen to be more
careful about the updates given how you use your machine (to render items
where you may not want to be sitting there delaying updates while your
machine does all the heavy calculating and such.) Not to mention the weird
things that might happen while you are doing these renderings and some file
(system) it may be using is attempting to get updated. I would definitely
think you are a prime candidate for more of a controlled (by you)
installation of updates.

It's all a "woulda, coulda, shoulda" deal - much like frequent backups and
the likes. You think "it will never happen" and then get mad when it does
and you weren't ready for it. =)

Sorry you lost your work - my suggestion is not to depend on the automatic
updates to do everything for you from now on - but rather just download and
tell you there are updates. It will save you possible heart-ache and
frustration in the future.

Are you on a corporate network with a policy? If so, you know who to
point the finger at..........

Of course I will in the future. But why does the program do its own thing
when you say not to restart? And why can't it just ask once instead of every
few minutes?

No, this is just a home computer. I'm pointing the finger at MS for the
program not listening to the user.

You never answered the question: Is this a corporate managed PC?

Actually - they answered you directly 40 minutes before you posed this
question again.
