"Groundhog Day!": KB939373 won't install...sort of...

G'day all;

Hardware: HP Media Center PC model - m7680n
Software: XP Pro - current and up-to-date as of this morning
Additional: Live OneCare customer/user

With one exception: KB939373 keeps showing up on "Updates are ready to be
installed on your computer" message from Live OneCare. I also have that
little LOC tag on the "Turn Off" button on the "Turn Off Computer" pop-up.

When I click on "do it", it goes through the machinations of installing
something...gets done...and shuts down. Yet on reboot that same update is
ready to be loaded again. The log shows a successful installation (about
2-dozen or 'em at last count), yet it doesn't seem to end up getting that
item cleared.

I have also manually gone the MS update route. Same thing. It finds it's
needed, downloads and apparently installs it...but on the next check, there
it is again...

It's beginning to feel like "Groundhog Day" around here. How do I clean
this thing up?

Regards all,
Dusty B

Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs >
Windows Components > Internet Information Services (IIS) installed?
If so (and you don't need it to run a web server), uncheck it.

G'day "Michael Jennings" & all;

**THANK YOU!!!**

As you'd suggested, I did indeed find IIS installed. IIRC, I got that from
some MS message about updates. Thought I needed it. Installed it. Pressed
on from there.

But your suggestion to remove it was apparently spot on. Thanks again!

I pride myself on being computer savvy enough to figure most things out on
my own. And what I can't figure out, I'm usually self-sufficient enough to
have read lots of pages of text about this and even tangentially related
issues. But I absolutely missed this connection. I searched, browsed, and
cross-referenced the MS KB database and got nada! Where/what did I do wrong
to have missed that?

Anyway, this problem is resolved thanks--again--to your most able help.
Thanks for letting me finally put that darned groundhog to bed...(:-o)!

Muchos gracias my friend,
Dusty -- Everett, Wa.

Think nothing of it. I suppose you made a quite elaborate and very
complicated search, but you could find out where you went wrong
by imitating Bill Murray and doing it again until you nailed it. Hint:
in Internet Explorer > Help > Online Support > enter 939373 in
the "Search Support (KB) box > examine MS07-041 > think.

But what if one needs to run IIS locally. This is a big problem for me and I
can't believe more people are not having this issue. I have three updates
that show as installed in add/remove programs but with IIS installed the
continually prompt to be installed:
KB939373
KB942830
KB942831

WinXP Pro SP2
IIS 5.1
..NET Framework 2.0 SP1

Those KBs won't install if you have run the Microsoft IIS Lockdown Tool
or you've manually adjusted the security settings.

They also won't install if index services catalog is corrupt (go
figure!).

Here's how I fixed it:

Stop and disable IIS
Stop and disable Index Services
Uninstall Index Services
Uninstall IIS
Delete Inetpub folder
reboot
install IIS
install Index Services
reboot
