Growing Hard Drive

I have a Gateway laptop running Vista Home, 2 gigs RAM. The volume on the
hard drive grows constantly, even after deleting large files. A Google
return suggested using the Disk Cleanup Utility to change the back-up specs,
which I will try, however the laptop is over two years old and never had
this problem before. Looking for some other possible causes to research.
Possibly a related issue is that MS Word (2K) has stopped working. It opens
and stalls, eventually I get a "not responding" message. Tried uninstalling
Office, then re-installed, but no change.
AVG scan does not show a problem, nor does Spybot and Adaware.
