I have a sli enabled motherboard and 2 ge force 7900 bfg video cards, and I
cannot get halo 2 to run exept extremely slowly, and it stutters all through
the game.

I am at a loss for what to do.

running a intel 1.86 duo core processor, and halo just will not run at all.

Microsoft, are you Listening?

If SLI mode is enabled on here under Vista it all goes to hell and I
have a similar setup... under XP Pro it works as it should although SLI
seems more a device for selling video cards than anything pertaining to
graphical performance

I suspect the OP's problem is drivers + SLI mode together.

I just have to comment on the previous MVPs questions ....
How much RAM? How much free disk space? Why didn't you ask what color the
case was? Or how much his whole PC weighed?

He names his mother board and has an SLI configuration - he doesnt need to
be asked about memory or hard disk space.

The entry requirements for MVP status seemed to be more about just posting
stupid unhelpful posts to news groups.

Nothing worse, I agree..

Well except maybe for people who post complaints about useless messages only
neglecting to post anything useful in their own messages.

Glass Houses bud...

Marshall, SLI mode is warnky (buggy) in Vista. Try dropping a card, and yes
I agree, SLI is pretty much a bragging right now a days, or it could be
considered a cheap way to upgrade your video card, like for instance I have
a 7900 gt that I was thinking of slapping another one in there since they
are realitively cheap now.

Some dual GPU (SLI/Crossfire) fixes were done recently to the Winodws Vista
OS, and some recent driver updates have been made by graphics vendors as
well. Make sure you have all the latest drivers and Windows Updates.

Of course there could be a lot of other things causing performance problems,
which is why MVPs ask for more detail about your system.

Yes, I "used to" do support, if we got an email like, "Help, game no
workie." we always asked for everything including their make of kitchen
sink.

Might not use all the info, but if you need help, what's the harm in
answering? Saves time.

Sid,
one thing that sounds screwy but you might try. When the screen goes blank,
try turning the monitor off and back on again. I don't know why but I
occasionally had to do that during Halo 2 play. I'm guessing the screensaver
settings kicked in somehow and then got confused.

Hey Sid,

If your monitor is "going blank" and the LED starts blinking that's usually
because your video card is sending a signal to your monitor that it doesn't
like.

If you own a really old computer monitor that could be the problem. Halo may
be trying to startup in 1280x1024 @ 75Hz and your monitor doesn't support
that mode.

Try this.
Right-Click on your desktop and choose Personalize from the menu that comes
up.
From the window that comes up, click on Display Settings (Last option in the
list)

In the middle of this window it should say something like:

(Name of Monitor) on (Video Card Type)

For example, my computer at work says, "Dell 1907FP(Digital) on NVIDIA
GeForce 7300 LE"

If your system says something like, "(Default) on NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS"
It could be that your monitor is not Plug n Play compatible. When Vista
starts up it checks your monitor to find out what resolutions it supports,
if your monitor isn't turned on when you startup Vista, it might not get
this information.

Solutuion is to reboot your computer. Make sure your monitor is turned on
and plugged directly into your video card (don't use a Keyboard, Video,
Mouse switch (KVM)) when you reboot. Check that screen again and see if your
computer monitor is listed now. If it is, try Halo 2 again.

Not sure if there's a way outside of Halo 2 to tell it to startup in a lower
resolution. I'm at the office right now and I don't have Halo 2 in front of
me. Maybe someone else can chime in. I think Halo is starting in a
resolution that your monitor can't handle. That's not saying it won't work
with your monitor, you just have to force Halo to start in another mode.

When you start the game, try pressing ALT+ENTER (Hold Alt, tap Enter), that
might switch the game to windowed mode and get you in so you can at least
play around.

Good luck,
Andy
