Halting SP2 for XP download

I had automated updates enabled for Windows XP Professional.

It started to download SP2. I realised what was happening and didn't want
this, so I disabled automated updates. However, it appears that the download
is now scheduled, so that every time I connect to the Internet it resumes.
It's going to take a long time on a dial-up.

What I want to know is how I can stop this already scheduled download from
resuming every time I connect to the Internet.

To reset the pending download you now have, clean out the Download
folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).


To avoid that Automatic Updates tries to install SP2:

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC
Through Automatic Updates and Windows Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Note that the 120 days (4 months) delay mentioned in the link above
is now actually 240 days (8 months).

Run the XPSP2BlockerTools.exe in the link above. It will extract
several files to the folder you specify.

Then run XPSP2Blocker.exe to activate the blockage (it will create
the registry value described in the link above).

This way you can still use Automatic Updates to update your computer
but avoid to get SP2 installed (up to 16. April 2005).
