So, my Windows XP Pro SP2 Windows Update software is busted. It downloads ok
but then fails to install. Pain. Paid Microsoft support themselves tried
and failed to figure out what's wrong.

It turns out it is easy to hand install these updates; find and invoke the
various update.exe files down from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
-- for example
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\126b5745d dca77b9d635ed46c361c072\update\update.exe
was where I found KB908519. Note: the manual installation will not be
recorded in your Windows Update installation history.

Perhaps someday I will re-install Windows from scratch to fix it all up but
until then at least it is easier to keep up with updates.

Phone support for Windows Update issues are **free**. The phone call may
not be. http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=6527
