I've been through numerous threads, and have not found a solution (though I
have tried: spybot for clientman, Update trouble shooter, regsvr32
wintrust.dll ).

When I click windows update, and subsequently scan for updates, my system
hangs at "Windows Update is looking for available updates... 0% complete".

How I got in this mess is a long story that I'll spare anyone willing to
help, but here's a nutshell description:
1. Out of the blue one morning, I got messages during boot up that certain
files couldn't be found. I recognized them as Norton AV files, which I had
uninstalled in favor of PandaAV. I suspect that this was a latent symantec
process to remind me my subscription was up that did not get uninstalled.

2. I found and deleted the files from my registry (they were Symantec *.VXD
files.

3. My system then booted without incident, however IE6 would allow me to
surf, but not use any buttons with Javascipts associated (nothing would
happen). This prevented me from using any help sites, such as this.

4. In desperation I reloaded IE6 from a file I had previously saved.

5. Everything seems to work now, except Windows update.

I'm running Windows98 on a Toshiba Tecra8000.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mike,

Can you try Methods 3 & 4 on this KB article please.

Execute #3 first; if that fails then try #4.

Windows Update scan for updates stops responding at 0%

I hope this helps.

Craig, Thanks so much for the suggestions. I had been to these fixes
earlier. Three didn't do it, and for some reason, I'm unable to get 4 to
function as shown. After downloading the file and extracting, I get an error
message when I right click and tell it to install. It is looking for, and
can't find file %DiskName%. It prompts me to insert the original
manufacturers disk.... which, of course, I don't have. I tried it again, and
ran into the same problem

Interestingly, I only get to try that install once. After that it ignores
further attempts to right click and install.

Here's what's in the iuctl.inf file (I see the line referring to %DiskName%,
but don't know how to deal with it):

;INF file for Project1.ocx
;DestDir can be 10 for Windows directory, 11 for Windows\System(32)
directory, or left blank for the Occache directory.

Craig, I forgot to mention that for option 3, the 'Automatically detect
settings' box was already unchecked. And, BTW, I am not using any
accelerator as metioned under options 1 & 2.

To be sure that it wasn't related to my router (Lynksys 4 port), or DSL
service (earthlink), I had my wife do a Windows Update from her machine. It
worked fine (lucky gurl.. LOL.).
