Greetings,
Italics and bold are not features of Messenger. They are features of Messenger Plus which
presently doesn't work with 8.1. Apparently it will be available this weekend as per
Patchou's posting today:

The entire store for emoticons, display pictures and winks has changed in 8.1 which is why
they're out of order. Hard to say if that will get fixed.
