Vista Business, SP1
Core2Duo with 4GB
No ReadyBoost
5400RPM drive, 160GB

A very, very slick laptop that runs great, but obviously
I want MORE...

Boot from a cold start now takes about 95 seconds.
Standby takes 9 seconds.
Recover from standby takes about 5 seconds.
Shutdown takes 24 seconds.

I've already reduced WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 5
seconds, with no apparent penalty.

There are no unnecessary startups, though I have not
begun snipping away Services.

What else can I do to accelerate both ends of the cycle?
Where can I get reliable help in determining which
Services to kill?

Thanks!

To quote Frank:

Simple huh?

If you want my advice and I do agree with what Frank has said, I'd suggest
that you look at an alternative OS to run on that laptop. Ubuntu is a GREAT
OS that runs fast, is stable, is secure and comes with 25000+ free software
packages that are installed by simply selecting them and clicking your
mouse. You can learn more by visiting: http://www.ubuntu.com

BTW, with Ubuntu, you can run all the services you want and won't notice any
slowdown. Also, you won't need to run all the anti-virus crap that blogs
down a Windoze system, because with Ubuntu you're going to be using a
secure OS.

Cheers.

Great Tweak on boosting your laptop hard drive speed. It actually works too and by default is turned off in Vista.

I'll bet you get impatient with the time it takes to microwave an egg too.

Thanks. I know you mean well, just as the white-shirt
black-tie missionaries rapping on my front door mean
well. But Linux doesn't permit the applications I need
to do my job. Period. I have many years with Linux with
all its delightful hobbyist derivatives, and I know the
difference. I need Windows to earn a living.

Please, please don't tell me about the 25k apps
available for Linux. Mine are not there.

Ike

Excellent information -- Thanks.

I have some quick benchmarks that indicate improvement,
and over time will check more carefully.

First of all Ike, nostop, onthepot, doris or whatever stupid name that
loser is currently using, he/she/it is nothing but a lying linux troll.
I think you know that, right?
Now the one weak spot I immediately noticed in your listing is your HDD.
5,400RPM is slow by todays 7,000/10,000/15,000 RPM HDD.
It is your main bottleneck and the only remedy is to replace it.
The fastest and easiest choice other than a SCSI 15,000 RPH HDD is an
SATA 10,000 RPM HDD. If you do that then you can simply clone your Vista
install to it, remove your old 5,400 RPM drive and you'd be good to go.
You'll notice an immediate increase in your computer speed!

Hello "e":
When you're not operating on battery power would your cpu set to
performance in power management help speed up start up, shutdown, sleep and
resume from sleep? Of course you'd have to change it back to power saving
for battery use. Guess it depends how frequently you're on battery power.
