Hi, I just purchased a HP Pavilion a1730n desktop with Vista Premium and when
i set it up i went to check the hard disc space and to my surprise 65 gigs
out of my 320 gig hard disc were already used, is this normal or is something
wrong. I already called HP and the vendor and they were quick to reply it's
normal. I'm not convinced so please can anyone clear this up for me.

Thanks, Franco

Hello,

this could be if there's a large pack of software installed (as usual on
these computers). Go to C:\Program Files and check how large it is. If
necessary, see if there are other folders in C: (or other hard drive
partitions) that could take up so much disk space.

Hope this helps.
Greetings,

Hi, I went to check in the add/remove and there's 5 gigs of programs
installed, that's why i don't understand, is Vista hiding something or what.

Thanks, Franco

Add/remove is not an accurate measurement of the disk space occupied by an
installed program.

There are many things that take up disk space, and many of them are not
readily visible to the user.

You will likely have a page file and hibernation file equal to the amount of
RAM you have installed on your computer.

You will likely have a recovery partition to bring your computer back to
"out of the box" condition.

You will have the system volume information folder that holds all of the
restore points that are created when you install each, and every, program.
This could be equal to 10-15 % of the initial hard drive capacity. The
bigger the drive the more space is allocated.
